Learn More About Therapy

Did you know there are different types of therapy? Your therapist will be trained in one or more of these types. Different techniques work for different people. But don’t be overwhelmed – this breakdown will put it simply:
Art Therapy

Art Therapy

Art therapy uses creativity to express emotions, identify feelings, and provide new coping skills in doing so. Techniques include drawing, painting, coloring, sculpting, or collage. There is creative freedom and you do not have to be a good artist!
Acceptance Therapy

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT teaches ways to deal with any painful thoughts or feelings by using mindfulness. It helps you find out what is important and meaningful in your life. It then encourages you to use these values to guide and motivate you in future.
Cognitive Therapy

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

You may have heard of this one. CBT is an evidence-based hands-on approach. It uses problem-solving to change patterns of thinking and reduce unpleasant feelings.

Counselling

Counselling is a short-term method to work through problems that come up in your life from outside factors – stuff like school, friendships, or work. So if you have something you want to get off your chest, this may be the way!

Dance Therapy

Dance Movement Therapy (DMT)

DMT looks at the link between movement and emotion. This helps with self esteem, anxiety, and gives us a chance to express our feelings through dance.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

DBT focuses on understanding why you do certain things, and is very good for living in a more mindful way. DBT can help with understanding your emotions, regulating stress, and accepting yourself.

Drama Therapy

Drama Therapy

Drama uses techniques like play, projection, performance and improvisation to create positive, meaningful change. This type of therapy helps with transition, loss, social stigmatization, mood, anxiety, depression and can strengthen relationships.

Emotion Focused Therapy

Emotion focused therapy looks at how to understand, feel, and regulate your emotions. It can help you gain awareness of how you’re feeling and control big emotions which may cause you stress positive ways.

Gestalt Therapy

Gestalt therapy focuses on your life in the present, instead of looking into your past, focusing on the personal responsibility for your wellbeing. This helps you take control over your treatment.

Integrative Therapy

Integrative therapy uses a lot of different techniques to build a therapy style which will help you as an individual. This is great if you don’t know what you need help with, as it is very personalised.

Motivational Therapy

Motivational Interviewing

A method using motivational conversation with your therapist which increases your want to make changes in your life and the belief you can do so.
Music Therapy

Music Therapy

In your life, you have probably developed a powerful relationship with music. It can stir memories and impact our feelings, helping us to express our thoughts and share feelings. Many musical instruments and styles, including the voice, can be used. You can create your own music / songs where you can connect with the world and express yourself.

Person-Centered Therapy

Person-centered therapy focuses on you and considers your life experiences, demographic, and preference. This is unique to every person, so it is very flexible and makes sure you are at the centre of every decision.

Play Therapy

Play Therapy makes telling your story or working through issues seem easier and less overwhelming. Sand tray therapy may also help you get in touch with your feelings which are hard to talk about.

Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic therapy focuses on the root causes of your actions and thoughts, drawing connections between your past and present. It uses a lot of self-reflection, and seeks to draw out patterns which may be affecting your life.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is an in-depth look into points in your life which still affect you and help find ways to move past them. This will help you understand your reactions, motivations, and emotions.

Sleep Therapy

Sleep therapists promote healthy lifestyle tips and use CBT which helps identify and replace thoughts and behaviors that cause or worsen sleep with healthy habits that encourage sleep.

Solution Focused Therapy

Solution focused therapy is future-focused, goal-directed and wants to create solutions instead of analysing problems. It is usually short-term, and helps with issues created by not being able to move past an obstacle.
